Abstract: Modern civilization is undergoing a profound cognitive crisis: while scientific rationality has achieved unprecedented success, it has simultaneously expelled meaning, value, and inner experience from the cognitive landscape, leading to spiritual emptiness, value confusion, and a loss of meaning. The essence of this crisis is the monopolar expansion of the “Scientific Chain” and the complete absence of the “Xuanxue Chain”—the two pillars of human cognition have fallen out of balance. This paper proposes the “Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix” as the fundamental cognitive paradigm for a new civilizational era, advocating that outward-exploring scientific rationality and inward-diving Xuanxue intuition should co-evolve and mutually validate, together constituting a complete cognitive architecture akin to the DNA double helix. The paper systematically elaborates how the Double Helix reconstructs worldviews, views of life, and value systems, and further explores its application pathways across five major domains: educational reform, psychological healing, cultural innovation, technological ethics, and social governance. This paper argues that the Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix is not only a diagnosis and response to the modern cognitive crisis but also the inevitable choice and fundamental orientation for the cognitive ascent of humanity in the new civilizational era.

1. Introduction: The Cognitive Schism of Modern Civilization

In the span of just a few centuries, modern civilization has achieved unprecedented material prosperity and technological marvels through scientific rationality. However, as the light of instrumental rationality illuminated every corner of the external world, humanity’s inner spiritual realm gradually fell into shadow. The vacuum of meaning, the chaos of values, the nothingness of existence—these spiritual predicaments are not accidental side effects but the inevitable outcome of a structural imbalance within the modern cognitive paradigm.

The essence of this imbalance is the fragmentation of complete human cognition into two mutually isolated domains. One path we term the “Scientific Chain”—which, through empirical observation, logical reasoning, and mathematical modeling, outwardly explores objective laws in pursuit of repeatable, verifiable knowledge. The Scientific Chain has given rise to modern technological civilization, but its excessive expansion has brought serious consequences: all experiences that cannot be directly measured or repeatedly verified have been expelled from the territory of serious cognition, even elevated into an exclusive ideology—“scientism.”

The other path we term the “Xuanxue Chain”—which, through systematic intuition, introspective practice, and symbolic thinking, inwardly dives to explore the origin of existence, the potential of consciousness, and the interconnections of meaning. The Xuanxue Chain is the foundation for meaning-generation and value-settlement, yet in modern times it has been simplistically equated with superstition and systematically excluded.

The separation and imbalance of these two chains are the root cause of many predicaments in modern civilization. At the academic level, it has trapped complex phenomena such as consciousness studies, aesthetic experience, moral intuition, and cultural meaning in explanatory difficulties, giving rise to theoretical impasses like the “hard problem” of consciousness. At the social and individual life level, it has created a separation between meaning and instrument, leading to value relativism, spiritual emptiness, and a rootless state of existence. People have become adept at analyzing the world, yet increasingly perplexed about how to settle themselves within it.

Clearly, what humanity needs is not more knowledge accumulated on a single track, but a fundamental ascent of cognitive mode—a new framework capable of integrating outward exploration with inner experience, instrumental rationality with value rationality. The “Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix” proposed in this paper is precisely a profound response to the call of this new civilizational era.

2. The Cognitive Foundations of the Double Helix

2.1 Defining the Cognitive Paradigm

Before proceeding with the discussion, it is necessary to clarify the concept of “cognitive paradigm.” A cognitive paradigm refers to the shared underlying assumptions, methodological frameworks, and value standards concerning “what constitutes valid knowledge” and “how to acquire it” that are held by a specific academic community or civilizational tradition in its exploration of the world. It functions as the “cognitive gene” of a civilization or discipline, prescribing what can be studied, what can be verified, and what can be accepted.

Science and Xuanxue represent two distinct cognitive paradigms. Science pursues verifiable external laws; Xuanxue explores inwardly experiential inner realities. Each paradigm has its own appropriate boundaries and irreplaceable value. The cognitive paradigm of the new civilizational era should transcend the choice of either-or and move toward the synergy of the Double Helix.

2.2 Defining the Scientific Chain and the Xuanxue Chain

To construct the Double Helix system of the Scientific Chain and the Xuanxue Chain, it is first necessary to provide precise definitions for science and Xuanxue.

Science is a “grammatical system of external experience and cognition” through which humanity, taking external instruments as its laboratory, explores verifiable and testable objective laws by means of empirical observation, logical reasoning, and mathematical modeling.

Xuanxue is a “grammatical system of inner experience and cognition” through which humanity, taking its own consciousness as the primal laboratory, systematically explores the origin of existence, the potential of consciousness, and the holistic interconnections of all things by means of systematic intuitive modeling, introspective practices, and symbolic thinking.

The Scientific Chain is one of the Double Helix chains based on scientific cognition; it is humanity’s outward-exploring cognitive path. The Scientific Chain is humanity’s fundamental pathway to establishing publicly verifiable, predictable, and controllable universal applications—its core lies in “outward inquiry”: approaching truth through external instruments and public validation.

The Xuanxue Chain is one of the Double Helix chains based on Xuanxue cognition; it is humanity’s inward-diving cognitive path. The Xuanxue Chain is humanity’s fundamental pathway for the settlement of meaning, the generation of value, and transcendent experience—its core lies in “inward inquiry”: touching truth through inner verification.

The two chains are not opposed but symmetrically complementary. The Scientific Chain answers “how”; the Xuanxue Chain asks “why.” The Scientific Chain constructs objective knowledge; the Xuanxue Chain generates value and meaning. Like the two legs of a human being, neither can be dispensed with—without both, one cannot walk far.

2.3 The Essence of the Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix

The Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix is the fundamental cognitive methodology in which outward-exploring scientific rationality and inward-diving Xuanxue intuition form an interdependent, mutually validating, co-evolutionary, and spiraling progression. It is the core cognitive methodology of the “Tianyuanzi Thought.”

The metaphor of the “Double Helix” reveals the essence of this cognitive paradigm: the two chains each operate independently, maintaining their own purity and methodological autonomy, while simultaneously, around the common axis of “the pursuit of truth,” they continuously exchange information and mutually validate.

Science disenchants and anchors Xuanxue: Science’s critical rationality and empirical spirit provide an “immune system” for Xuanxue exploration, guarding against self-deception, clarifying ambiguous expressions, and stripping away cultural dross, thereby steering inner knowledge toward precision and communicability, preventing it from sliding into delusion.

Xuanxue enlightens and expands the frontiers of science: The wealth of “anomalous experiences” and holistic insights that Xuanxue attends to continuously challenge the boundaries of the scientific paradigm, posing new questions, infusing conceptual inspiration, and even foreshadowing possible directions for future scientific revolutions, preventing science from degenerating into directionless frenzy.

The spiraling ascent mechanism: Through the cycle of “problem-posing (often originating in Xuanxue experience) → rational testing and modeling (scientific intervention) → paradigm reflection and conceptual innovation (new hypotheses born from tension) → new synthesis and application,” the Scientific Chain and the Xuanxue Chain drive human cognition to continuously break through existing limitations and ascend toward higher-order integrative understanding.

3. Reconstructing the Worldview for the New Civilizational Era

3.1 From Mechanical Universe to Meaningful Universe

The dominant worldview since the scientific revolution has depicted the universe as a vast machine governed by physical laws. This process of “disenchantment,” while liberating reason, also stripped the universe of meaning and purpose. The Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix offers a new worldview: the universe is not only physical but also meaningful.

In this new worldview, the cosmos is understood as a ceaseless self-praxis named “Truth.” Time and space are not absolute containers but the “narrative grammar” and “relational field” of this praxis. Life is not an accidental chemical product but a critical leap through which praxis acquires a “conscious perspective.” Every conscious individual is a unique node through which the cosmos knows itself, bearing an irreplaceable perspective and value.

3.2 From Subject-Object Dualism to Subject-Object Integration

Modern science is founded upon the dualistic separation of subject and object, observer and observed. While this presupposition has enabled objective knowledge, it has also produced a fundamental alienation between humanity and the world. The Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix advocates a new epistemology: at the deep level of cognition, subject and object are not radically separated but mutually participant and co-evolutionary.

The synergy of the Scientific Chain and the Xuanxue Chain is precisely the practical embodiment of this epistemology. In the Scientific Chain, we explore the external world as observers; in the Xuanxue Chain, we explore the inner cosmos as experiencers. These are not two activities in two worlds, but two aspects of the same cognitive process. When we cognize through the Double Helix, the boundary between subject and object becomes fluid, and the alienation between humanity and the world is healed.

4. Reshaping the View of Life for the New Civilizational Era

4.1 The Absolute Dignity of the “Unique Node”

The modern view of life is built upon the atomistic presupposition of individualism: the human being is an isolated, contingent, self-creating existence. While this presupposition has granted individual freedom, it has also cast the individual into a rootless void. The Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix offers a new view of life: every conscious individual is a “unique node” in the cosmic praxis of Truth.

Each conscious individual’s “Consciousness DNA” is absolutely unique, irreproducible, and irreplaceable. This means that every life possesses an absolute value at the cosmological level—not because of what it possesses, but because it is itself an irreplaceable perspective through which the cosmos knows itself. This insight finds an ontological foundation for individual dignity that transcends social comparison and merit-based evaluation.

4.2 From “Lived Life” to “Conscious Life”

In the old paradigm, life is passive experience—the individual is thrown into the world, living out a life within a predetermined framework. The Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix offers a new possibility: conscious life—the individual actively becomes a co-author of their own life narrative through the cognitive practice of the Double Helix.

This is precisely the practical essence of “Spirit-Forging the Farther Shore”: the conscious subject, through the cognitive practice of the Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix, continuously reshapes its own inner structure while progressively arriving at higher-order integrated states. Life is no longer a puzzle of biological adaptation and social competition awaiting explanation, but the answer to the cosmos’s creative process.

5. Reorienting Values for the New Civilizational Era

5.1 From Preference Aggregation to Value Resonance

The dominant paradigm of modern ethics treats values as an aggregation of individual preferences. The good is defined as “what the majority prefers,” and evil as “what the majority rejects.” While operationally convenient, this paradigm cannot answer the fundamental question: if the majority prefers evil, does evil then become good?

Values are not statistical aggregates of preferences but arise from resonance. True moral choice is not utilitarian calculation but resonance with the higher-order value field. The higher-order value field is an energy-information field of high order and stable frequency, anchored by the fundamental laws of the cosmos—the ontological ground for universal values such as truth, goodness, beauty, wisdom, and creativity. Moral judgment is not “how many people want it” but “what it resonates with”—an action that resonates with the grand cosmic order of harmony.

5.2 From Instrumental Rationality to Meaningful Rationality

The strength of modern civilization lies in the extreme development of instrumental rationality, yet its predicament also stems from this: instrumental rationality asks only “how,” never “why.” When values are reduced to social contracts or evolutionary strategies, meaning easily falls into relativism.

The Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix provides a new, intrinsic, ontological form of rationality for value and meaning—meaningful rationality. Meaningful rationality is not a negation of instrumental rationality but its complement and guide. Before asking “how to do it,” it first asks “why do it”; before optimizing means, it first examines their purpose and meaning. Meaningful rationality is precisely the concrete manifestation of “higher-order value field resonance” at the level of individual cognition and practice.

6. Five Domains of Practice for the New Civilizational Era

6.1 Educational Reform: From Knowledge Transmission to Cultivating the “Whole Person”

The fundamental flaw of the current educational system lies in its one-sided emphasis on knowledge transmission and skill training (the Scientific Chain), while neglecting the pursuit of meaning, the cultivation of values, and inner experience (the Xuanxue Chain). The Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix demands that education return to its original meaning—guiding individuals to become “whole persons.”

In educational practice, this means:

Cultivating in students, alongside scientific knowledge, the capacity to ask “why do we learn” and “why do we live.”

Incorporating aesthetic experience, moral judgment, and the meaning of life—core elements of the Xuanxue Chain—into the essential categories of education.

Cultivating a “Double Helix personality” capable of both precisely analyzing the world and profoundly experiencing value and meaning.

6.2 Psychological Healing: From Symptom Management to Meaning Reconstruction

Modern psychology and psychiatry excel at managing symptoms, yet often avoid the fundamental questions: what is the meaning of pain? Where does the value of existence lie? The Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix offers a deeper healing path—supplementing science-based symptom management with Xuanxue-based meaning reconstruction.

New directions in psychological healing include:

Helping individuals rebuild connection with the higher-order value field, restoring the foundation of meaning.

Reshaping the individual’s “Consciousness DNA” structure through Double Helix practices such as introspection and cognitive training.

Re-weaving the individual’s painful experiences into a meaningful existential narrative, rather than merely eliminating symptoms.

6.3 Cultural Innovation: From Deconstruction to Meaning Regeneration

Postmodern culture excels at deconstruction—dismantling authority, dissolving meaning, and revealing illusions. When deconstruction is complete, what remains is a vacuum of meaning. Cultural vitality and genuine innovation arise from the deep resonance between the Scientific Chain and the Xuanxue Chain. The Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix advocates a new direction for cultural innovation—after deconstruction, the reconstruction of rooted meaning.

Pathways for cultural innovation include:

Creating art and thought with soul, grounded in the intuition and verification of the Xuanxue Chain.

Using the rationality of the Scientific Chain as a tool to provide communicable language and logic for new systems of meaning.

Seeking shared higher-order values across diverse cultures, stimulating root-level creativity, and fostering deep dialogue among civilizations.

6.4 Technological Ethics: From Risk Management to Meaning Interrogation

Faced with disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence and genetic engineering, the traditional paradigm relies on the Scientific Chain’s “risk-benefit” analytical framework—calculating gains and harms, then making trade-offs. Yet this paradigm overlooks more fundamental questions: does this technology enhance or diminish human subjectivity? Does it enrich or impoverish human experience and connection? Does it lead toward a more desirable, dignified future?

The Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix elevates technological ethics to a new height—“meaning-value” interrogation. Technology must not only ask “what can it do,” but also “what should it do”; not only assess risks, but also interrogate meaning.

6.5 Social Governance: From Efficiency Optimization to Symbiotic Wisdom

The dominant paradigm of modern social governance pursues efficiency maximization and cost minimization, treating society as an optimizable system. The Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix offers an alternative paradigm—viewing society as a symbiotic organism, where the goal of governance is not control and optimization, but intelligent synergy and harmonious co-existence.

New concepts in social governance include:

Incorporating both the precision of scientific analysis and the holistic insight of Xuanxue intuition in decision-making.

Respecting diverse cultural interfaces, seeking the possibility of resonance amidst difference.

Taking the health and order of the “collective consciousness field” as a deep indicator of governance, rather than merely GDP or efficiency metrics.

7. From Survival Civilization to Symbiotic Civilization

The ultimate orientation of the Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix is a fundamental transformation of human civilization—from a “survival civilization” to a “symbiotic civilization.”

Characteristics of the survival civilization: survival, competition, materiality. Driven by scarcity and fear, it pursues material growth, security, and competitive advantage; the Scientific Chain dominates while the Xuanxue Chain is suppressed or mystified; individuals are resources or threats to the collective; the relationship with nature is one of plunder and conquest; success is measured by GDP, speed, and status.

Characteristics of the symbiotic civilization: existence, creation, meaning. Driven by creativity and fulfillment, it pursues the expansion of consciousness, depth of understanding, and cosmic harmony; the Scientific Chain and Xuanxue Chain synergize, with reason and intuition mutually validating; individuals are unique self-aware nodes, and the collective is a creative field formed by the resonance among individuals; the relationship with nature is one of dialogue and symbiotic partnership; success is measured by the order of the collective consciousness field, the quality of creative output, and ecological harmony.

The transition from survival to symbiosis is not a technological upgrade but a leap in cognitive paradigm. The Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix is precisely the navigational chart and propulsion engine for this leap.

8. Conclusion: The Lighthouse Is Lit

Modern civilization stands at a crossroads. One path continues the inertia of the old paradigm—the monopolar expansion of the Scientific Chain deepens, and the paradox of material abundance alongside spiritual emptiness intensifies. The other path opens a new cognitive ascent—reconstructing the cognitive paradigm through the Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix, moving toward the farther shore of a new civilization in the synergy of scientific rationality and Xuanxue intuition.

The Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix is not a new philosophical school, nor a conceptual game within an academic ivory tower. It is the authentic return of humanity’s complete cognitive capacity, the fundamental framework for settling individual life and guiding civilizational direction in the new civilizational era.

It is a lighthouse—not to illuminate a single specific route, but to let all voyagers know: in the ocean of the new civilization, there is a path that can reweave reason and intuition, the individual and the whole, science and meaning into a complete web of life.

This is not a distant utopia, but a tangible path beginning with the transformation of each person’s cognitive mode. This, precisely, is the deepest cognitive revolution called for by our era, and the “Great Rationality” that ultimately points toward the wholeness of life and the civilization of the cosmos.
